International GCSE Phase
An 18 Month program. During Year 1 and Year 2 (Stage 9 & Stage 10): Learners take 6 subjects
In GCSE, learners will start preparing intensively for the GCSE examinations which will take place after 18 months in year 10. These are completed and marked at an accredited British International examination center. Our students start IGCSE earlier (in Grade 9) to ensure excellent results and enough time to master the programme. Starting in year 9, allows students to spend more time on AS Levels, which is significantly more challenging than IGCSE.
The GCSE qualifications provide a solid foundation for higher level courses such as A and AS Levels. A minimum requirement for RSA Matriculation Certificate is: 4 GCSE and 1 AS subject. But, BRC recommends 6 IGCSE subjects and 5 AS Level subjects to ensure University exemption.
We currently offer the following subjects for the GCSE’s: *The subjects selected must include two different languages, English 1st Language being compulsory. No student with fewer subjects than five IGCSE subjects will be awarded an ICE certificate. Any additional subjects that a student wishes to take that is not offered by BRC, may be done in their own personal capacity.
- English First Language
- Afrikaans Second Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology

- Business Studies
In addition to the above, all BRC students need to take the Cambridge global perspectives support subject. This series is focused on teaching skills students will use their whole life. This series develops life skills such as researching, analysing information, critical thinking, independent thinking, reflection, collaboration and communication.
Students working through the International GCSE program are expected to commit to making a consistent effort with their learning. Students are expected to complete all tasks and assignments on time, prepare thoroughly for tests and mock examinations, and to follow the recommendations of their educators when additional efforts are required. Spending sufficient time on mastering content outside of school time is paramount to a students success at GCSE level.
AS Levels
Equivalent to Grade 12: Learners take 5 – 6 subjects
At AS level, learners will be in their final 12-18 months of their schooling and will intensively prepare for their final examinations. These are written and assessed at accredited British International exam centers. Students work towards mastering AS Levels and A Levels during their Grade 11 and 12 years.
The following subjects will be continued from International GCSE level:

In addition to the above, all BRC students need to take the Cambridge global perspectives support subject. This series is focused on teaching skills students will use their whole life. Parental support in supervising and assisting students with studying at home is imperative. BRC provides training and support to all families on how to approach the above.
*Note: for most students, AS levels are completed more successfully over two years. It is not advisable to sit for external exams with less than 12 dedicated months of exam preparations. Stronger students may add A Level subjects in their second year of AS Levels, this is however, not necessary for university exemption in South Africa.
